Infill density refers to how much of a part's interior is filled with plastic (0–100%), while infill pattern is the geometric shape the material forms (e.g. Grid, Gyroid or Cubic).
Infill density
0–15% (Low): Best for decorative or display models where strength is not a priority.
15–50% (Medium): The “golden mean” for most general and practical parts.
50–100% (High): Used for heavy parts or parts that need to bear weight.
Tip: If you need more strength, it is often more effective to add more walls (wall loops/perimeters) than simply to raise the infill density.
Common infill patterns & tips
|
Pattern |
Key characteristic |
Best use |
|
Grid |
Quick and strong, but the nozzle crosses previously printed lines, which can cause vibration or noise. |
Conventional load-bearing parts where print speed matters. |
|
Gyroid |
Strong in all directions (isotropic) and the nozzle never crosses its own path, which reduces vibration. |
High-strength parts or flexible materials such as TPU. |
|
Cubic |
A three-dimensional pattern that gives good stiffness and is often quicker to print than Gyroid. |
Large, sturdy parts that need to withstand impact. |
|
Lightning |
Places infill only where needed to support the top layers; mostly hollow inside. |
Quick prints, non-load-bearing parts and decorative items |
|
Adaptive Cubic |
Automatically increases density near the walls and reduces it in the centre. |
Large models where you want to save material without losing surface support. |
Advanced tips for Bambu Studio
Use Modifiers: You can right-click the model and choose “Add Modifier” to apply higher infill density only to certain areas, such as around bolt holes or joints, while the rest of the model stays light.
Infill Combination: Enable this in the “Strength” tab to print infill with a greater layer height than the walls. This can shorten print time significantly without affecting the quality of the exterior.
Avoiding warping: For tougher materials such as ABS or ASA, it is good to use patterns with fewer straight lines (e.g. Gyroid) to reduce internal stress and shrinkage.
